Consulting/ IT Consulting

This year saw a phenomenal increase in offers from consulting companies at SPJIMR. 19% of the batch was placed in leading Consulting firms.

The consulting bandwagon led by McKinsey and Co. included Arthur D’Little, Accenture Business Consulting (ABC), Deloitte,Ernst and Young, KPMG, PwC, CEB and TSMG. Deloitte picked up maximum number of students for their various divisions. Accenture for the first time gave offers for the Global Talent and Innovation Network team. IT consulting was offered by Cognizant Business Consulting (CBC) and Capgemini.

Other offers included profiles like Strategic Consulting, Operations consulting and Financial Advisory.

Finance

The major finance players on the campus included JP Morgan, IIFL, Standard Chartered, Citi Bank, Deutsche Bank, ICICI Bank, Edelweiss, ICRA, Avista Advisory , SBI Caps, HSBC , Yes Bank, Axis Bank etc. Offers were received across a plethora of functions ranging fromInvestment Banking , Corporate Banking, Institutional Equities , Equity Research , Credit Rating, Credit Risk, Treasury , Project Finance and Corporate Finance. The campus also saw participation from Multinational firms like Thomson Reuters making exclusive offers for their Global Business Graduate Program. 21.35% of the batch got offers in the Financial Services and Banking sector

IT/ITes

IT companies like Microsoft, HCL Technologies and IBM offered Sales roles. Corporate IT roles were offered from business giants like General Electric, Proctor and Gamble and Citibank. Other IT majors included TCS, Wipro, Polaris, HP, Winshuttle, i-Gate etc.

Marketing and Operations

Marketing, Sales and Supply chain roles were made by FMCG majors including Procter & Gamble, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Johnson & Johnson, Dabur, Asian Paints, Nestle, Marico, Britannia, Nivea and Wipro Consumer.

For the first time HUL picked up a lateral hire from campus for the supply chain division. This placement season, also had participation from companies like Bharti Airtel, Philips, Novartis, CEAT and Titan offering our students niche roles across diverse sectors.

Companies like 3M, Cummins also visited the campus for the first time offering roles for the students with operation majors. 23% of the batch got offers from FMCG majors

CAT 2010 Data Interpretation strategies

Data Interpretation consists of three sections viz. Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency and Reasoning. It is easily the most scoring section of any exam- if the fundamentals are in place.

Data Interpretation (D.I.) : contains information presented in the form of Bar graphs, Line Graphs, Pie Charts, Tables, Histograms etc. The student is required to analyze the information provided and supply the answer to asked queries related to the data given. Students who are good at heavy mental calculation are at an advantage as it is one of the keys for doing well in this section. This section tests the students skills in Percentage calculation, Profit and Loss Analysis, and Ratio Proportion.

Data Sufficiency: is a section where a statement is given and with it are provided two options which could hold the key to the answer. The student is required to independently analyze both the answer keys and see from which the answer can be derived. The student has to tick one of the five options for the answer.

• If answer can be derived from Answer key A- then answer is A.

• If answer can be derived from Answer key B- then answer is B.

• If answer can be derived from both A & B independently- then answer will be C.

• If answer can be derived from a combination of A & B- then answer is D.

• If answer cannot be derived from any of the options, then the answer is E.

Imp: Many times students get confused when the solution does yield an answer with both the answer keys but the answer is different in both the cases. In such a scenario, C would be the correct option is the right one as long as both the options provide unique answers (i.e. it can't be -2 or +2, it has to be either).

Reasoning: as a section can be tackled very well if the mental calculation is fast. There are broadly three types of reasoning questions: Linear, Circular and Tabular.

The right way to start preparing for CAT 2010

People often go to soothsayers and astrologers to find the most opportune time to embark upon a project of importance. Whether or not that helps is a matter of personal belief. We, however, have some timely advice for those preparing for CAT this year. Most serious CAT aspirants will give anything to find out the perfect moment to start preparing for the exam. We spoke to Vaishnu Dass, Quant faculty at TCY and sought his expert views.

Vaishnu is an authority on Quant preparation and gives coaching for CAT, GRE & GMAT. Faculty at TCY, he has been coaching aspirants for these exams for the last 14 years.

Is there a 'magic number' of hours of coaching that one should get while preparing for Quant part of CAT?

There is no 'magic number' of hours as such. Nevertheless, there are an optimum number of hours of classroom lectures that are required. From my experience of over 14 years, I feel that at least 84 hours must be allocated for Quant in order to excel in it.

How do you divide these hours? How many hours a day? How many days a week?
I would divide CAT test prep into three distinct categories. Rush Hour, Optimum and Ideal. Let's talk about 'Rush Hour' first.

Rush Hour: is when a candidate sincerely starts his CAT prep after his final year exam. With just about six months to go for the CAT, the entire preparation schedule has to be completed in a relatively short time. For instance, at TCY, classes are scheduled six days a week and here, the onus is on the student to keep up with the hectic pace.

The student has to understand that a very self-disciplined effort in self-study will be required on his part to make it to the top.

Optimum: is when a student is in his final year and starts preparing in January/ February of his graduation year. With around 9-10 months to go, the pace of instruction is brisk but not as breathless as 'Rush Hour'. For Instance, at TCY, classes are scheduled three days a week and a student gets optimum time to revise what is being taught in the classroom. A break of one day between classes allows students the luxury of self studying at the pace most suited to their temperament.

Even an average student who studies sincerely and consistently has every chance of making it to the B- School list.

Ideal: This is when a student enters the penultimate year of his graduation degree course. A good faculty gets the time to teach students to crawl before making them walk and run hard! Basics are covered in depth and preparation starts at the very grassroot level. At TCY, we schedule classes only twice a week over the weekend initially.

The first few months are spent entirely in concept building. It can be compared to being able to dig the foundations oneself before laying them and finally constructing upon them. By the time a student reaches the final year of his degree course, his foundation is so strong that he is more than halfway ready to take on the CAT. The best part about this is that it is of longer duration and more exhaustive than Optimum, but generally costs less.

What preparation strategy would you suggest for each of the three distinct categories you just mentioned?

In Rush Hour, I would recommend the student to take a Diagnostic Test first. A diagnostic test is a mock test especially made to gauge an aspirant's grasp of concepts. Once the strengths and weaknesses are clear to a student, it is recommended that a student start working on his weak areas first as they are the ones that offer maximum chance of improvement. What advice would you give to CAT aspirants?

First, the student has to be very clear 'if' he wants to go for MBA. To explain, let us take a hypothetical situation. A BBA student is in his second year and he has consistently been getting good percentage so far. If he is extremely sure that he will not take up a job straight after graduating, he can afford to take his foot off the pedal a little bit and start preparing for CAT. As long as his overall percentage remains above 50%, he can appear for CAT. A high CAT score will see him secure a call from the best B- Schools in the country.

On the other hand, even if he gets overall 70% in BBA, he can't secure a call from a good business school with a low CAT score. I again say, vision is very important. If MBA is not of paramount importance, focus fully on your current academic pursuit. If MBA is your ultimate goal, learn to keep your focus and prioritise accordingly.

Since I attended so many GD, GT and PIs, it would not be possible for me to narrate all the experiences.

However, I would like to share a few things which are very important for any college.

1) Be honest. Never bluff.

2) If you are a fresher, be prepared for technical questions like – ur final year project, ur seminar, ur training, ur favorite subject, etc

3) If you have work-ex, be prepared for questions related to business of ur company like – who were ur clients, what was the business of the clients, ur company’s hierarchy, sales and turnover of ur company, number of employees, etc.

4) Interview is a pre-planned game. Pls understand this. Go prepared with answers for all the question like – introduce urself, why MBA, why this particular college, ur hobbies, ur strengths, weakness, career goals, etc.

5) For every question, ur answer shud be logical and if the interviewer asks, u shud be able to give suitable examples to justify wat u have said.

6) Be prepared for cross-questions.

7) Smile wen u enter the room.

Come formally dressed. Proper haircut and clean shaven. It is very important. .

9) Remain updated about all GK and current affairs stuff. Read morning’s newspaper on the day of interview.

10) Always have a stand and have ur own opinion about whatever is asked to u, esp. in the case of debatable issues and current affairs.

11) Never talk about placements in the interview. Never compare any college.

12) Do a lot of research about the college before attending its interview. It helps u to speak confidently in the interview wen asked for questions related to why mba and why this college, etc.

13) Be thorough about ur hobbies. It is very much possible that ur entire interview can go discussing ur hobbies. If u don’t know all the details, say, about ur favourite game, u are out. It gives a very bad impression.

Today I’ll write about the other interview – you have just graduated in engineering, science, commerce, life sciences, literature or any other discipline. You want to get into your dream college to complete your MBA and land that fabulous job. After doing well in the entrance test and GD / Presentation / Essay, you still have to appear before an interview panel. Certain aspects remain the same – punctuality, dress sense, learning to say “I don’t know” and so on. (Please read the first part: The Interview Challenge.) However, there are some unique features too. Let us look at some of them.

1. Why do you want to do an MBA? This is one of the most common and yet one of the most difficult questions to answer. After all, a recent research by INSEAD professors has revealed that among the top 100 CEOs (as measured by long-term value creation), more than half did not have an MBA. In life, there are always exceptions. The No. 1 ranked CEO, Steve Jobs, didn’t even finish college. For the rest of us though, education is important. How you answer this question determines the flow of the rest of the interview. Please avoid canned or clichéd answers. Example: I am an engineer, I have the technical skills, I want to sharpen my managerial skills. Or I have always been fascinated by management (since when – even when you were a kid?). Or I have done bio-tech, I don’t like research, therefore I want to do an MBA. Just consider these sample answers carefully – they have one thing in common – they lack focus. Focus is so critical that everything else can take a rear seat. At one of the Ivy League schools, a landmark study was conducted decades ago to determine the importance of focus. 300 graduating students were asked what they wanted to become after 15 years. 97% provided generic answers – marketing manager of a large MNC, finance manager of a top investment banking firm. Only 3% gave precise answers – “I want to be the CXO of ABC Corporation and I want to increase shareholder value by 80% in 3 years.” This batch of brilliant youngsters was monitored for 15 years. The results were tabulated. Guess what? The 3% who were focused had 97% of the wealth. In one of the global institutions I am associated with, the first day on campus is devoted entirely to write down your life’s goal. Ideally, at the end of the day, you should be able to name the company you would like to work for. During campus recruitment, that is the only company you will be allowed to appear for. Imagine something like this being replicated in Indian B-Schools. What might be the outcome? Therefore, I suggest you start writing a journal and prepare a solid and persuasive answer as to why you want to do an MBA.

2. Because of the diversity of aspirants, interviewers have to ask them a few questions about undergraduate studies. Examples: An automobile engineer may be asked to name the latest development in engine technology. A computer science graduate may be asked the internal architecture of an operating system like Windows. A commerce graduate may be asked about the rates of personal or corporate taxation. A bio-technologist may be asked to explain enzymes and their importance. A literature graduate may be asked about one of the classics, say Milton’s Paradise Lost and to comment on it. This is where students tend to flounder or try to get away by bluffing. Fatal mistake. Bottom line: Please be conversant with your undergraduate studies and subjects. Just because you want to do an MBA does not mean you can forget your basics.

3. Business Awareness: It is assumed that anyone who wants to do an MBA is aware of what is going on in the business world – leading business magazines, business TV channels, the largest company in the sector you want to make a career in, the business leader you admire and the reasons for it and the difference between India and China. My purpose is to educate, not to find fault. This is an area where aspirants are found terribly wanting. If you haven’t already done it, pick up at least one business newspaper and one business magazine and start reading at least one hour every day. The same rule applies to general knowledge and awareness. (Please don’t say you couldn’t read the newspaper because you were on a train for three days; pick up a paper at any railway station and be prepared.)

4. Hobbies and interests: Of all the answers that we get to this question, watching TV seems to be the favorite. Be honest. Can you say watching TV is a hobby? Or music. Which type of music? Oh, nothing in particular. Maybe you think it is a great answer but it won’t get you through. You can have just one hobby – say gardening – and if you know enough about it, you are likely to sail through. Be passionate about your hobby. If you don’t have one, start one. It is never too late. How about joining a self-help group, or be a member of a local NGO. Remember, anything you say must be backed up by evidence. Same thing goes for attributes you claim: “I am very innovative.” Most likely follow-up: Tell us something innovative you have done in the last one week. Please do remember the person sitting on the other side didn’t get there by magic.

5. Attitude: I can repeat this a thousand times and still it won’t be enough. Develop a positive attitude. Be an optimist. Look at all the blessings you have. Remember the adage about the man who was crying he had no shoes till he saw a man with no legs?

Prepare well, be confident and composed, and give off your very best.

Second Phase of CAT 2009 and Related Matters

The first phase of CAT 2009 was from November 28th to December 8th, 2009. The second phase of CAT 2009 will be on January 30th and 31st, 2010.

Equity and fairness requires that candidates who faced disruptions during the test be given an opportunity to complete the test while not requiring those who completed the test successfully to take the test again.

The following candidates would be scheduled for a test in the second phase of CAT 2009:

those who could not take the test due to planned or unplanned closure of their test lab and were not rescheduled later in the first phase. (This does not include voluntary no-shows.)
those who were rescheduled but could not appear for the test because of notice period of less than 48 hours.
those who were rescheduled but could not appear for the test as they were rescheduled in a city different from their original choice.
those who pressed the End/Quit button within the first 120 minutes during the first three days of the testing window and have not been rescheduled yet. (If a candidate in this category chooses not to take the rescheduled test, then his/her score from the first phase of testing will be retained.)
those who completed the test in more than 140 minutes of clock-time* due to computer disruptions. (If a candidate in this category does not appear for the rescheduled test, then his/her score from the first phase of testing will be considered null and void.)
those who completed the test in 136 minutes to 140 minutes of clock-time* due to computer disruptions would have an option to take the rescheduled test. (If a candidate in this category does not appear for the rescheduled test, then his/her score from the first phase of testing will be retained.)
those who experienced difficulties due to various kinds of disruptions such as frozen computer screen, blank screen, and data/graphic elements not displaying properly; identified through site reports recorded at the test labs and have not been rescheduled yet.

(* Clock-time refers to actual elapsed time from the start of the test to the end of the test for a candidate. This is different from the time indicated by the count-down timer which was displayed on the computer screen.)

The above criteria have been arrived at based on the analysis of calls and emails received from the candidates; site reports filed by the site managers; computer logs; and information gathered from websites and blogs. The rescheduling (based on the above criteria) and the psychometric equivalences that will be established across the tests address all issues of equity and fairness raised in various forums (including those pertaining to candidates getting additional clock-time).

The candidates identified for the re-test in phase two would receive communication from Prometric by January 10, 2010. The results of CAT 2009 are likely to be declared by the third week of February 2010.

IIM-B: CAT to go online this year

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore has announced that the Common Admission Test (CAT) of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong is going to be a Computer Based Test (CBT) from this year onwards.

The test will be conducted in a window of about 10 days sometime at the end of the calendar year. CBT CAT will be a candidate-friendly test in terms of flexibility in the selection of test date, ease of registration process, better physical environment and test experience, and enhanced security in terms of biometric identification of candidates and video monitoring.

The CBT format also would improve communication between candidates and IIMs in terms of programme information, test delivery, receipt of admit cards, and receipt of score reports.

With growing student aspirations to undertake management education, the number of candidates appearing for CAT has been increasing manifold. To accomodate this massive increase, the IIMs have decided to undertake the CBT.

The Common Admission Test (CAT), like all MBA entrance examinations, is basically a test of speed and accuracy.
The most important strategy is effective time management. The bulk of poor scores result from mismanagement of time on exam day.

But why do student so frequently make this mistake?
Some say that mounting pressure during the test caused them to panic. Others say they came across new material that left them shocked and confused. Still others got entangled in a few lengthy questions, leaving them precious little time to complete the test.
Let’s discuss time management strategies that will help you secure an excellent score.

Here are some exam day tips:
When you receive the CAT, do not start attempting the questions immediately. It is better to scan the paper and try to determine which sections and questions will be easiest to answer.

The exam lasts for 150 minutes. Here’s how you should divide your time:
~ 5 minutes for filling in personal data and marking the OMR sheet (145 left)~ 5 minutes to scan the paper and plan your approach (140 left)~ 45 minutes at the most for your strongest section (at least 95 left)~ 45 minutes for the medium section (at least 50 minutes left)~ 45 minutes for your weakest section (5 minutes left)~ 5 minutes to review your test and make sure everything is in order
If you feel that 45 minutes is more than you need for your strongest section, allocate the time to your weakest section. The extra time may help you get a good percentile in your weakest area.

For each section, start by selecting the questions which will consume less time and you are able to solve with confidence. Only after handling easy questions should you move on to more difficult ones.

Verbal questions such as direct dictionary meanings and sentence corrections should be the priority, as they do not require much time. Say you are good at vocabulary — you will only need a few minutes for ten questions. The time you save here can be utilised while doing an inference based question from a passage that requires more work.

Some more important tips:
Answer all questions that you can confidently solve. Avoid all questions that confuse you.
Do not attempt a question that takes more than five or ten minutes to solve; it will only hurt your score.
Read ALL instructions carefully before you start
Always keep an eye on the clock; check every ten minutes to make sure you are on track.

Never watch your neighbours; the person next to you may work quickly but inaccurately. Your only measuring stick should be the clock.
Stop studying at least 24 hours before your exam. Relax and enjoy the day. This will keep you stress-free.
